ByteDance Faces Cease-and-Desist Order for Seedance AI Tool

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, received a cease-and-desist letter from Disney regarding its new generative AI tool, Seedance 2.0. Disney accuses ByteDance of copyright infringement, claiming the AI tool uses a “pirated library” of Disney characters and franchises, including Star Wars and Marvel. Disney’s attorney stated that ByteDance is willfully reproducing and distributing Disney’s intellectual property. The release of Seedance 2.0 has prompted criticism from various industry bodies, including SAG-AFTRA and the Motion Picture Association (MPA), which condemned ByteDance’s lack of safeguards against copyright violations. The MPA’s CEO emphasized that ByteDance’s actions disregard copyright laws that protect creators’ rights. Despite these challenges, Disney has invested in AI, taking a stake in OpenAI, and plans to license its characters for AI-generated content. This situation highlights the ongoing tension between the use of generative AI and the protection of creative intellectual property in the entertainment industry.
