Sam Altman Endorses India as an Emerging ‘Full Stack AI Leader’ Ahead of the 2026 AI Summit, Signaling Enhanced Collaboration

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has lauded India’s potential as a “full-stack AI leader” ahead of the Global AI Impact Summit 2026. With India becoming OpenAI’s second-largest user base, Altman plans to deepen partnerships with the Indian government, emphasizing the need for widespread AI adoption, infrastructure enhancement, and skill development. He stated that approximately 100 million users engage with OpenAI tools weekly, largely comprised of students. Altman highlighted three essential pillars for AI success in India: ensuring accessibility, fostering adoption across various sectors like education and agriculture, and enhancing AI literacy.

He praised the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which supports startups and research, and aims to provide AI-based public services. However, he warned of a potential “capability overhang,” stressing that access must be paired with effective training. The Global AI Impact Summit will explore governance and inclusive growth strategies to shape the AI landscape in India and beyond, highlighting the collaborative evolution of AI within a democratic framework.
