Disney and ByteDance Clash Over Seedance AI Copyright Dispute

Disney recently refuted claims of releasing unaired footage featuring Marvel’s Wolverine and Thanos, clarifying that the viral clip was an AI-generated creation using ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 model. The video, which garnered over 142,000 views on X, has sparked widespread discussion online. Disney’s legal approach stems from concerns over unauthorized use of its intellectual property, particularly when ByteDance allegedly included a “pirated library” of Disney characters. The company issued a cease-and-desist letter, highlighting ongoing disputes with various AI platforms, including a lawsuit against Midjourney and Character.AI for copyright infringement. However, Disney’s strategy varies; it has successfully negotiated licensing agreements with OpenAI, granting access to key characters for a new text-to-video platform. Disney sees AI as a way to enhance audience engagement, stating it can transform user experiences on Disney+, incorporating user-generated content in innovative ways.
