Enhancing Patient Understanding and Confidence in Optometric Data Through AI Tools

Research presented at the 2025 American Optometric Association Conference highlighted the benefits of utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) tools in optometric patient education. A study conducted by MohammadEsmaeil Keypour and colleagues involved 384 adult participants divided into an intervention group using the Eye1 AI tool and a control group receiving standard care. The AI tool, which provided comprehensive assessments and personalized recommendations, resulted in a 35% knowledge improvement in the AI group compared to 20% in the control group. Additionally, 80% of the AI group reported satisfaction versus 60% in the control group, while decision-making confidence rose by 40% in the AI group. The researchers concluded that AI tools significantly enhance patient knowledge, satisfaction, and confidence but should support rather than replace human care. They emphasized the importance of transparency in AI usage to maintain patient trust and suggested further research to explore long-term outcomes and demographic disparities.
