ByteDance, parent company of TikTok, is ramping up intellectual property (IP) safeguards for its new AI video generator, Seedance 2.0, following legal threats from major U.S. studios like Disney and Paramount. Amid the tool’s rising popularity in China—highlighted by user-generated clips featuring actors like Tom Cruise—the scrutiny intensified when Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter. The letter alleges that Seedance 2.0 was trained using unauthorized characters from popular franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, and claimed it reproduced derivative works featuring iconic heroes like Spider-Man and Darth Vader. In response, ByteDance announced it is enhancing protective measures to prevent the generation of unauthorized content, although specifics remain undisclosed. Other studios are also taking legal action, reflecting a growing concern over IP rights in AI applications. Disney previously secured a licensing deal with OpenAI for character use in its Sora video generator, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in the interface of AI and intellectual property.
