Google is set to replace its voice assistant on Android devices with the AI chatbot Gemini, with the update launching on July 7. This enhancement allows Gemini to access essential apps—Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities—regardless of whether the Gemini Apps Activity setting is disabled. By disabling this setting, users can prevent their interactions from being used to improve Google’s AI models while still utilizing Gemini for tasks like calling, messaging, and media control. Google reassured users that they can control app connections at any time, ensuring that their private data remains secure. The update aims to enhance user experience by enabling a personal assistant function without contributing to AI model training. Conversations may be retained for 72 hours for security, even with the setting turned off. This transition occurs as Gemini prepares to fully replace Google Assistant later this year.
