Rick Perry’s Fermi Project: Developing a Massive AI-Powered Nuclear, Natural Gas, and Solar Energy Facility

Fermi America, co-founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, has unveiled plans for a significant power and AI data campus in Amarillo, Texas, in collaboration with the Texas Tech University System. This HyperGrid campus will encompass 5,769 acres and feature the largest nuclear power complex and combined-cycle natural gas projects in the U.S., alongside solar and battery energy storage capabilities. It aims to generate up to 11 gigawatts (GW) of power and provide 18 million square feet for AI applications, becoming the world’s largest energy-driven AI hub. Perry emphasized the urgency of advancing U.S. energy capabilities, citing competition with China’s nuclear developments. The partnership is expected to enhance Texas Tech’s academic and research infrastructure and create workforce training opportunities. Geotechnical work has commenced, with plans to achieve 1 GW of power by the end of 2026. Congressman Ronny Jackson highlighted this investment as a vital step in maintaining U.S. competitiveness in AI.
