Google DeepMind’s Hassabis Describes AI as the ‘Ultimate Tool’ for Scientific Advancement, Urges Caution with AGI Development

At the India AI Summit on February 19, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as the “ultimate tool” for speeding up scientific discovery. He predicted that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could emerge in the next five years, marking a pivotal moment for the technology. Hassabis highlighted the need for a careful and responsible approach to AGI, advocating for scientific methods and robust monitoring systems. He expressed optimism about AI’s capacity to revolutionize fields like science and medicine, referencing the success of AlphaFold in solving protein-folding challenges. This, he suggested, signals a new era akin to discovering fire or electricity. Additionally, Hassabis commended India’s AI ecosystem, noting the strong contributions from Google and DeepMind in Bengaluru. He declared India well-positioned to become a global AI leader, celebrating its impressive advancements in AI research and applications.
