Recent Studies Indicate AI May Diminish Human Intelligence

admin

Recent studies from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and MIT suggest that regular use of AI can diminish cognitive abilities. The Wharton study involved over 4,500 participants researching how to start a vegetable garden. Those who utilized chatbots like ChatGPT displayed shallower knowledge compared to those using Google Search, leading to poorer quality advice. Researchers noted that AI’s synthesis of information encourages passive learning, weakening users’ depth of understanding. Similarly, the MIT study indicated that students using ChatGPT exhibited reduced brain activity, termed “cognitive debt.” Critics have questioned the MIT study’s methodology due to its small sample size and lack of peer review. Despite debate, outsourcing mental tasks to AI may stifle independent thinking. The broader concern is reflected in educational contexts, where reliance on AI tools contributes to a decline in fundamental skills like essay writing, raising alarms about the potential long-term effects on academic performance and critical thinking.
