Army Embraces AI in Doctrine Development While Recognizing Its Limitations

The Army is innovating by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) tools into its doctrine writing process, as announced by the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate (CADD). This initiative aims to assist military personnel in generating ideas, enhancing grammar, and improving readability of foundational documents. While AI offers efficiency, the Army acknowledges its “critical flaws,” including potential misinformation risks that could undermine public trust. Despite these challenges, the tools are being utilized to streamline searches across extensive texts for historical narratives that support doctrinal themes. CADD Director Richard Creed emphasizes the importance of data access for effective AI operation. The training strategy includes embedding experienced personnel to guide writers, ensuring that AI remains a supportive resource rather than a substitute for human expertise. Each AI-generated output undergoes thorough human review to ensure accuracy. The Army aims to harness the potential of AI while maintaining the integrity of its foundational publications.
