A UK university has launched a free tool to promote safe AI application usage, addressing potential risks amid the rapid growth of AI technology across various industries. Developed by the PHAWM (Participatory Harm Auditing Workbenches and Methodologies) project led by the University of Glasgow, the tool helps organizations, policymakers, and the public evaluate AI apps effectively. Partnering with the University of Strathclyde, the initiative supports regulations like the EU’s AI Act, which aims to balance innovation with risk protection. The user-friendly tool allows individuals to perform audits on AI applications, particularly benefiting those typically excluded, such as impacted end-users. Principal Investigator Dr. Yashar Moshfeghi emphasized the necessity of empowering users, especially non-technical ones, to harness AI’s benefits while minimizing risks. Funded by 3.5 million pounds from Responsible AI UK, PHAWM collaborates with over 30 researchers and is developing comprehensive training and support for effective tool adoption.
