Google Play has seen a notable decrease in malicious app activity, thanks to enhanced security measures and AI technology, as reported in its 2025 Android app ecosystem safety report. The tech giant thwarted 1.75 million policy-violating apps from being published, down from previous years (2.36 million in 2024 and 2.28 million in 2023). Key initiatives included banning over 80,000 developer accounts, a significant reduction from 158,000 in 2024. Google’s investment in AI, including over 10,000 safety checks per app, has deterred bad actors and streamlined the review process through generative AI models. Significant improvements also include blocking access to sensitive user data for 255,000 apps—down from 1.3 million—and preventing 160 million spam reviews. Google Play Protect identified over 27 million malicious apps outside the Play Store, indicating a shift in how threats are being deployed. Future AI investments are planned for 2026 to continue addressing emerging threats.
