AI Tools from AWS Disrupt Cloud Systems for Hours

Amazon Web Services (AWS) faced two outages attributed to its AI tools, Kiro and Amazon Q Developer, stirring internal concerns about autonomous AI assistants. In December, a 13-hour outage occurred when engineers permitted Kiro to modify settings autonomously, leading to a system disruption that affected AWS service cost exploration. A senior AWS employee noted that these incidents were foreseeable due to a lack of required approvals for changes. Amazon clarified that the outages stemmed from user errors rather than AI faults, emphasizing that similar issues could arise from any developer tool. The company claims the December incident was limited to a single service in China and did not impact customer-facing services. AWS has since instituted safeguards like mandatory peer reviews and employee training to mitigate risks. Despite promotion of AI usage among developers, skepticism remains about AI tools’ reliability in coding tasks. The company aims for 80% of developers to consistently engage with AI in their workflows.
