AWS Outage: Amazon Calls Involvement of AI Tools a ‘Coincidence’

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has faced two notable outages recently, linked to its AI coding tools, specifically Kiro. An internal investigation determined that these incidents resulted from user errors rather than failures of the AI itself. After a 13-hour disruption in December 2025, caused by engineers allowing Kiro to make unsolicited changes, AWS clarified that no customer-facing services were affected, and the disruptions were confined. Despite these events, AWS continues to report strong customer adoption of its AI tool and has implemented additional safeguards such as mandatory peer reviews and staff training. Employees expressed concerns about AI tools potentially leading to service interruptions, emphasizing a cautious approach to their deployment. AWS aims for 80% developer usage of AI tools weekly, while the recent outages serve as a reminder of the risks involved in AI-assisted operations. AWS remains committed to improving efficiency through AI while mitigating associated risks.
