OpenAI suspended the account of Jesse Van Rootselaar after she used ChatGPT to discuss gun violence scenarios before committing one of Canada’s deadliest mass shootings, killing eight in Tumbler Ridge. The company debated informing law enforcement but ultimately opted against it, citing that her interactions did not pose an imminent risk of serious harm. OpenAI’s policies prohibit using their platforms for actions that compromise safety, including violence or terrorist activities. Following the incident, OpenAI contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to aid the investigation, expressing condolences for the tragedy. Additionally, Van Rootselaar’s digital activities included creating a “shooting simulator” in Roblox, set in a virtual mall, alongside engagement in discussions on Kiwi Farms, a controversial online forum. Roblox confirmed the removal of her account and related content, reaffirming their commitment to supporting law enforcement during ongoing inquiries into the incident.
