Mayo Clinic researchers have developed an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tool named StateViewer, designed to assist clinicians in identifying brain activity patterns linked to nine types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. This tool, which analyzes fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scans, demonstrated an 88% success rate in identifying dementia types and allows for nearly double the speed and three times the accuracy of conventional methods. Trained on over 3,600 scans, StateViewer addresses significant challenges in early and accurate diagnosis, particularly in complex cases where symptoms overlap. The technology is a promising advancement for clinics lacking neurology expertise and can facilitate timely treatment, which is critical as dementia affects over 55 million people globally. Directed by Dr. David Jones and developed alongside data scientist Dr. Leland Barnard, StateViewer aims to transform dementia diagnostics and enhance patient care, helping clinicians understand the complexities of brain health.
