OpenAI COO: Ads Will Evolve Through Iteration

OpenAI recently announced the rollout of ads for users on the free and Go tiers of ChatGPT, starting with U.S. users, despite criticism from competitors like Anthropic. During the India AI summit, COO Brad Lightcap emphasized that the advertising process will be iterative, focusing on user privacy and trust. He stated that well-executed ads could enhance user experience, urging users to be patient as the company refines its approach. Lightcap did not reveal plans for expanding ads beyond the U.S. market at this time. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman defended the company’s mission on X, emphasizing equitable AI access over profit motives, contrasting OpenAI’s model with that of richer competitors. Reports indicate that OpenAI is charging $60 for 1,000 impressions and requires a minimum commitment of $200,000 from advertisers. Notably, Shopify is integrating its advertising into ChatGPT, joining early adopters like Target and Adobe.
