Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is considering a new policy on artificial intelligence (AI) to guide staff in using AI tools effectively while ensuring compliance with privacy laws. This comes after a yearlong pilot involving 20 staff members who tested a district-approved AI tool. The proposed guidelines prioritize equitable outcomes and require staff to use only district-approved AI products, such as Google Gemini, which will be available to more staff in the upcoming school year. The policy aims to prepare staff for responsible AI use while safeguarding student information and addressing inherent biases in AI tools. An “AI Advisory Committee” will provide insights on districtwide AI use, while a roadmap for professional learning will assist staff in understanding AI beyond its technical aspects.
