Germany Takes Action to Ban Chinese AI App DeepSeek Amid Data Security Concerns

German authorities are urging Apple and Google to remove the Chinese AI app DeepSeek from their stores due to concerns over user data security. Berlin’s data protection commissioner, Meike Kamp, stated that the app was flagged as illegal content and has not provided sufficient evidence that the data of German users stored in China meets EU protection standards. She expressed concerns over the Chinese government’s extensive access rights to personal data from companies operating within its jurisdiction. This regulatory move follows reports linking DeepSeek to China’s military and intelligence sectors. The app, which claims to rival U.S.-developed technologies like ChatGPT, has attracted scrutiny regarding its data handling practices in both the U.S. and Europe.
