Understanding Open Source Responses to AI Contributions 🌐
In the wake of “AI Slopageddon,” my latest endeavor dives deep into how the open source community handles AI-generated contributions. While anecdotes of maintainer burnout and “AI slop” flooding pull requests are well-known, key questions remain unanswered:
- What policies exist?
- Are communities permissive, restrictive, or still uncertain?
- What drives these decisions—quality, copyright, ethics?
To shed light on these aspects, I analyzed policies from 32 open source organizations, including reputable foundations like the Linux Foundation and projects such as Matplotlib. The resulting visualization offers insights into policy stances—whether permissive, banning, or undecided—along with concerns about quality, copyright, and ethics.
