Study Reveals AI Tools Lead to Increased Workloads and Reduced Breaks

Vibe coding emerged as a potential stress-relief solution in software development, promising to reduce manual labor by leveraging AI tools. However, a recent University of California at Berkeley study, titled “AI Doesn’t Reduce Work—It Intensifies It,” challenges this notion. Over eight months, 200 employees who accessed AI tools found themselves working longer hours and at an accelerated pace. While autonomy increased as employees undertook tasks previously outsourced or deferred, this led to an overwhelming workload and possibly lower work quality. Many employees began utilizing AI during breaks, further compounding their tasks. Engineers also reported taking on additional responsibilities by mentoring peers on AI-generated code, which negated the expected workload reduction. Despite claims by 40% of executives that AI saved significant time, 67% of non-managers felt minimal benefit. Ultimately, many workers expressed anxiety and unease with AI, leading 40% to prefer avoiding these tools altogether.
