Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb and US Chief Design Officer, was recently seen in San Francisco using a mysterious metallic device, sparking intrigue on social media. A post on X featuring a man resembling Gebbia garnered over 500,000 views, showing him with metallic earbuds and a clamshell-shaped disc at a coffee shop. Speculation arose that this could be a prototype from OpenAI’s upcoming hardware line designed with Apple’s Jony Ive. An OpenAI spokesperson declined to comment, while Gebbia did not respond to inquiries. The earbuds resembled Huawei’s FreeClip 2 but were distinct from Huawei’s headphone case, raising security concerns given the company’s US ban. WIRED experts suggest Gebbia’s device might be similar to Soundcore’s AeroClips or Sony’s LinkBuds Clip. There are questions about whether this is a teaser for OpenAI’s hardware expected in 2027 despite previous denials from the company.
