Dakota State University (DSU) is investigating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture to understand producers’ decisions. Professors Cherie Noteboom and Abeer Alkhwaldi emphasize that while AI technology has progressed, its implementation in the Midwest, especially among small to medium-sized farms, remains limited. Their research identifies trust, perception, and social norms as key factors influencing AI adoption. Early findings reveal that farmers are motivated by the potential to improve yields and reduce costs; however, barriers such as high equipment costs and concerns over data security hinder integration. Noteboom emphasizes the need for transparent AI systems to build trust among farmers. The study also highlights the importance of clear regulations on data ownership to foster a secure environment for AI use. Ultimately, the research aims to inform policymakers on creating tailored AI solutions that align with agricultural practices, ensuring competitiveness in a global market while addressing farmers’ concerns.
