Accountants Adopt AI Tools Amid Growing Skepticism

A recent report, Karbon’s 2026 State of AI in Accounting, reveals that while 83% of accounting professionals are optimistic about AI, skepticism is rising regarding its practical applications. The report highlights a shift from novelty towards tools that enhance daily workflows. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool, adopted by 87% of respondents, followed by Karbon AI at 61% and Microsoft Copilot at 53%. Communication, meeting transcripts, and research emerged as primary use cases. However, concerns are growing around job disruption and data security, with fears that AI may replace specific roles. Interestingly, only 18% of respondents felt their peers share their optimism, suggesting a disconnect in attitudes towards AI. Mid-sized firms (21-50 staff) are the most enthusiastic about AI adoption, emphasizing the importance of training and clear policies for effective integration. Overall, the report emphasizes that responsible use of AI can enhance efficiency and decision-making in accounting.
