Vicor Partners with Spacechips for AI in Space Applications
Vicor, a leader in modular power components, has collaborated with the U.K.-based consultancy Spacechips to launch a streamlined AI accelerator card, the AI1 transponder. This compact on-board processor features an adaptive compute acceleration platform (ACAP) capable of delivering up to 133 tera operations per second (TOPS). Designed for in-orbit applications, the AI1 enhances capabilities in Earth observation, in-space servicing, and telecommunications while enabling autonomous computing.
In response to limited RF bandwidth, Dr. Rajan Bedi, CEO of Spacechips, emphasizes the necessity of on-orbit processing for real-time data insights. The partnership utilizes Vicor’s Factorized Power Architecture (FPA), which optimizes power density and efficiency, essential for the demanding space environment. With the increasing variety of space missions, this innovative solution provides precise power management, ensuring reliability and extended mission longevity. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in space technology, enhancing the feasibility of AI applications in space.
