Advancing the Conversation on Generative AI: It’s Time for Progress

Share

Generative AI is fundamentally altering higher education, with 92% of undergraduates utilizing AI tools, highlighting the need for effective program-level curriculum design. Currently, only a third of students feel their institutions adequately support responsible AI use, leading to inconsistencies in guidance and potential misunderstandings. The focus so far has been on mitigating risks, such as updating misconduct policies, but a more sustainable approach is needed. Developing clear frameworks, like ‘traffic light’ systems, can help standardize AI use across assessments. Instead of banning AI, institutions should integrate it into learning, focusing on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Each discipline needs tailored approaches that reflect its values while involving students in the design process. This shift from detection to design is crucial, as generative AI is not going away. By fostering confidence in AI use, we can enhance the learning experience and prepare students for modern challenges in education.
