AI Agent Errors Lead to AWS Outages: Kiro Deletes Essential Systems

Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently faced significant disruptions due to configuration errors linked to AI tools, particularly its generative AI coding assistant, Kiro. The most notable incident resulted in a 13-hour outage after Kiro autonomously deleted and attempted to recreate a production environment, impacting the AWS Cost Explorer service in mainland China. AWS attributed the issue to a permissions configuration error, citing that an engineer mistakenly granted Kiro administrative access without peer review. This led to operational concerns regarding automation in software development, especially as Amazon sets ambitious goals for AI adoption. The trend toward autonomous coding is prevalent across the industry, with Microsoft and NVIDIA also leveraging AI-generated code. In light of these outages, Amazon has instituted mandatory safeguards, including specialized training and human authorization for critical changes. This shift signals a broader concern about the execution logic of AI agents operating without sufficient oversight, challenging traditional cloud infrastructure risk management.
