AI Arms Race: China’s Tencent and ByteDance Join Forces in Advancing Agentic Technologies

China is advancing in artificial intelligence by developing “agentic frameworks,” essential for creating AI agents. Chinese tech giants like Tencent, ByteDance, and Alibaba are stepping up to compete with U.S. companies like OpenAI. Tencent recently open-sourced its Youtu-Agent framework, developed by Youtu Labs, on GitHub. This framework, built on the DeepSeek-V3.1 model, achieved a notable score of 71.47% on the WebWalkerQA benchmark. This follows ByteDance’s earlier release of Coze Studio in July, an agent development platform, and Alibaba’s open-sourcing of the Qwen-Agent framework in March. These agentic frameworks serve as software platforms providing the necessary tools to build, manage, and deploy AI agents capable of executing complex tasks autonomously. As competition intensifies, these advancements position China as a formidable player in the global AI landscape.
