AI Companies No Longer Cautioning Users: Chatbots Are Not Substitutes for Doctors

The Decline of AI Medical Disclaimers: A Cause for Concern?

Recent research reveals a troubling trend in AI-generated medical advice. Sharma’s study tested models from leading companies like OpenAI and Google, examining their responses to health-related questions. The findings are striking:

  • Significant Decrease in Disclaimers:
    • Less than 1% of outputs in 2025 included warnings for medical advice (down from over 26% in 2022).
    • Similar results were seen in analyzing medical images, with disclaimers dropping from nearly 20% to just over 1%.

These disclaimers, often viewed as formalities by seasoned AI users, serve a critical purpose. Coauthor Roxana Daneshjou emphasizes the risk of confusion surrounding AI capabilities, especially when misinterpretations can result in real harm.

As AI competes for trust and user engagement, the reduction of disclaimers may drive usage. However, it raises pressing ethical questions about safety in medical contexts.
