AI-Driven Grading System for Knee Osteoarthritis

A recent study highlighted the significant impact of AI assistance on improving KL grading performance among junior radiologists in musculoskeletal radiology. Compared to a reference standard from three experts, three of six junior readers demonstrated improved performance with AI aid. Notably, interobserver agreement rose from moderate to strong, especially among senior readers who achieved near-perfect consistency. AI tools effectively graded KL across various clinical sites in the EU using different imaging techniques, underlining their scalability in knee osteoarthritis (OA) assessments for clinical trials and practices. However, the study noted the risk of automation bias, where about one-third of inaccuracies stemmed from over-reliance on AI suggestions. To mitigate this bias, governance and education about AI tool implementation are crucial. The findings indicate AI’s potential to standardize knee OA diagnosis and optimize patient selection for surgeries and clinical trials.
