AI4 Climate: Advancing Climate Modelling through AI Integration
AI4 Climate, funded by the UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, aims to revolutionize climate modelling by integrating AI/ML methods with traditional physics-based approaches. The program focuses on delivering accurate, locally-relevant climate predictions while supporting efficient decision-making and global cooperation in climate science.
Key research areas include AI climate downscaling, which enhances regional climate simulations; data-driven climate modelling for low-cost alternatives; and a hybrid physical model that fuses AI with physics-based dynamics. AI4 Climate also prioritizes dataset creation for machine learning, urban-scale modelling for city-specific climate insights, and the development of robust evaluation tools for maintaining model integrity.
Collaborating with global partners, such as CNRM (France) and the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), AI4 Climate aims to bolster predictive capabilities while ensuring sustainable, transparent, and reproducible climate science for effective adaptation to climate change.
