AI Insider: Fostering Empathy in Future Physicians’ Patient Interactions

AI-generated patient simulations at UNSW are revolutionizing medical education by enhancing communication skills for future doctors. Given the challenges of providing ample, safe patient interaction opportunities, these simulations serve as a crucial supplement to traditional clinical placements. Associate Professor Silas Taylor leads an AI pilot in the Year 3 Medicine & Health curriculum that utilizes the SimConverse platform, allowing students to engage in virtual patient scenarios across various communication challenges. Students receive personalized, AI-generated feedback after each interaction, promoting reflection and skill enhancement. This innovative approach bridges gaps between theoretical learning and practical experience, allowing safe practice of complex conversations. Notably, students reported that these AI interfaces created a comfortable environment for tackling tough discussions without the pressure of oversight. The initiative addresses logistical constraints in in-person simulations, granting broader access to realistic patient interactions and advancing students’ clinical skills effectively.
