AI Job-Seeker Assistant Raises Concerns Over Increased Junk Applications

The UK government is set to launch an AI chatbot to assist unemployed Britons in job applications by 2027. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, aims to streamline administrative tasks and modernize public services amid rising joblessness, with 3.7 million individuals now claiming Universal Credit without work requirements. However, employers are concerned that this technology could lead to a surge in irrelevant applications, burdening hiring managers already overwhelmed with unsuitable CVs. A report shows that a significant number of recruiters believe AI usage could lead to candidates applying indiscriminately for jobs. While the government assures that the AI helper will be optional, potential challenges remain regarding application quality. Technology Secretary Peter Kyle argues that this initiative may enhance public services significantly, positioning the UK as a pioneer in employing AI agents for citizen assistance.
