AI scientist Ling Haibin, renowned for developing the world’s first mobile plant identification app, LeafSnap, has transitioned from the United States to a full-time position at Westlake University in Hangzhou, China. As a former Empire Innovation Professor at Stony Brook University and an IEEE Fellow, Ling is a pioneer in computer vision and AI. His work has played a crucial role in advancing plant diversity education and care. At Westlake University, Ling will serve as chair professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence, leading the Intelligent Computing and Application Lab. He cited the freedom for innovative research as a motivating factor for his move, emphasizing the need for fresh exploration in mature AI fields. Ling’s research spans computer vision, augmented reality, medical image analysis, and machine learning.
