Spanish-language radio in Latino communities is plagued by misinformation, which is challenging to track. The AI-powered app VERDAD, meaning “Truth” in Spanish, addresses this issue by identifying and translating misinformation from radio into English. Developed by journalist Martina Guzman at Wayne State University, with backing from California’s AI experts, VERDAD launched last year. The app allows users to filter misinformation by language, station, state, topic, and political stance, with health and political misinformation being prominent, often stemming from foreign sources like Russia’s Sputnik.
While nonprofits like Factchequeado serve as watchdogs, VERDAD enhances the efficiency of detecting false content for journalists, researchers, and listeners. Given the critical role of radio in Latino communities, tools like VERDAD are essential for promoting responsible media coverage. Guzman is committed to refining the app further, aiming to foster accountability among broadcasters and sponsors in addressing content fraud. For more details, visit VERDAD.
