AI Represents a Significant Threat to Women in the Global Workforce

admin

The conversation on the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on the labor market has evolved from concerns about job displacement to focusing on which jobs are at risk and the speed of these changes. Gender has emerged as a critical factor, especially in regions with existing gender disparities in employment. A significant report from May 2025 by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Poland’s NASK Research Institute highlights that women are disproportionately represented in roles susceptible to automation by generative AI, like Large Language Model chatbots. According to lead author Pawel Gmyrek, the findings indicate that for every man displaced, two women could lose their jobs, a situation notably concerning in countries like India, Brazil, and South Africa, where digitization efforts align with economic development strategies. This growing divide underscores the need for targeted policy interventions to mitigate the effects of AI on employment inequality.
