AI Showdown: ChatGPT Faces Decline in Web Traffic as Gemini Sees 3.3% Growth

Web traffic to OpenAI’s ChatGPT has seen a notable decline, dropping 9.6% in January 2026 compared to October 2025, while Google’s Gemini continues to gain traction with increased user engagement. Analytics from SimilarWeb reveal ChatGPT’s average daily visits decreased by 22% from peak levels of nearly 200 million in early January to approximately 158 million. In contrast, Gemini’s traffic rose to 55-60 million daily visits, reflecting a 3.3% increase in global traffic share in December. The decline for ChatGPT coincides with the successful rollout of Gemini 3, which has received praise for its enhanced capabilities, including advanced reasoning and multimodal support. Despite maintaining a 64.5% traffic lead globally, OpenAI’s CEO acknowledged “rough vibes” within the company amid heightened competition. Gemini users show deeper engagement with longer session durations compared to ChatGPT. Other emerging AI chatbots, like Grok and DeepSeek, are also gaining popularity, intensifying competition in the AI landscape.
