AI Takes the Stand: Supreme Court Trials Machine Learning for Case Management and Translation

The Indian Supreme Court has introduced innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools to enhance its judicial processes. Announced by Minister of State for Law, Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, these technologies aim to improve case management and access to justice through multilingual judgment translations. AI-powered tools now transcribe oral arguments from Constitutional Bench hearings, with transcripts available on the Supreme Court’s official website, fostering transparency.

To address language barriers, judgments are translated into 18 regional languages, accessible via the eSCR portal. The Supreme Court’s collaboration with IIT Madras has led to the development of tools that detect filing defects, improving the electronic filing system, currently being tested by select Advocates-on-Record. However, the SUPACE initiative for intelligent case analysis remains in the experimental phase, pending hardware upgrades. Importantly, the Supreme Court emphasizes that AI tools do not influence core judicial decision-making but serve supportive roles.
