Following President Trump’s pledge for an immigration crackdown, ICE aimed to recruit 10,000 new officers by 2025, supported by $75 billion from the Big Beautiful Bill. To expedite hiring, an AI tool categorized applicants based on their resumes—misclassifying many with no prior law enforcement experience into a four-week online training program instead of the mandated eight-week in-person course focused on critical areas like immigration law.
Reports indicate that a significant number of new recruits were improperly trained, exacerbating tensions around ICE’s aggressive enforcement tactics following high-profile incidents, like the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good. Amidst growing backlash, ICE has also been expanding its use of technology for surveillance, including contracts with controversial software firms and developing its own AI tools, highlighting concerns over the agency’s operational integrity and accountability.
