Jadon Geathers, a doctoral student in information science, created ChitterChatter, an innovative AI-powered tool aimed at enhancing foreign language speaking skills. Recognizing the lack of authentic conversation opportunities for language learners, Geathers designed ChitterChatter to simulate realistic dialogues, complete with various accents and dialects. The platform offers educators a scalable way to integrate speaking practice into their curricula, enabling students to receive real-time feedback on grammar and pronunciation. ChitterChatter recently won the 2025 Bits on Our Mind award and will be showcased at the ACM Learning @ Scale 2025 conference in Palermo, Italy. Geathers and faculty adviser Rene Kizilcec believe that quality language learning should be accessible for all, addressing the needs of students who struggle to find conversation partners. The pilot program has already indicated increased comfort for students practicing with the AI, laying the groundwork for future expansions to include a broader range of languages and enhanced features.
