AI Tool Identifies Adult Structural Heart Disease Through Smartwatch Technology

An innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tool showcased at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 effectively detected structural heart issues using single-lead ECGs from smartwatches. In a study involving 600 adults, the AI algorithm identified conditions like weakened heart function and damaged valves with 88% accuracy, offering a promising screening method. Traditional detection methods, like echocardiograms, are often unavailable for routine use, making this accessible smartwatch technology vital for early diagnosis of serious heart conditions. Researchers developed the AI model utilizing over 266,000 ECG recordings, ensuring its resilience against typical recording noise. With its high sensitivity (86%) and excellent negative predictive value (99%), the AI tool demonstrates significant potential for widespread heart disease screening, ultimately enhancing preventive care. This research highlights the intersection of AI and wearable health technology, paving the way for improved cardiovascular health outcomes.
