AI Tool Identifies Over 5,000 Disease Outbreaks Across India

India has revolutionized health surveillance with the deployment of “Health Sentinel,” an AI-driven tool launched by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in 2022. This groundbreaking technology, developed by Wadhwani AI, has issued real-time alerts for over 3,500 potential infectious disease outbreaks, significantly cutting manual workload by 98%. By scanning millions of news articles and media reports in 13 languages, “Health Sentinel” has processed over 300 million articles and detected over 95,000 unique health events. While the tool automates data collection, it maintains a “human-in-the-loop” approach, ensuring epidemiologists verify reports before dissemination to authorities. The impact is substantial, with a remarkable 150% increase in published health events since implementation. In 2024, “Health Sentinel” accounted for 96% of the health events tracked by the national surveillance system, epitomizing the transformative potential of AI in public health. This initiative underscores the importance of AI in proactive health response and disease detection.
