In Ahmedabad, the Income Tax (I-T) department has identified a nationwide scam involving bogus claims for tax deductions and exemptions. Using financial data from third-party sources and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools, investigators uncovered organized racks led by certain Income Tax Return (ITR) preparers. These individuals submitted false claims, including fictitious deductions for house rent allowance (HRA), donations, and education loans, among others. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) highlighted that these fraudulent activities comprised refund claims supported by fake proof. Investigations revealed 15 individuals and entities across Gujarat, including cities like Surat and Ahmedabad, aiding numerous taxpayers in making false claims. Analysis indicated misuse of exemptions under various tax sections without valid justification. Taxpayers are often attracted to these schemes by the promise of inflated refunds for a fee. The integration of AI tools is crucial in detecting and addressing such tax evasion scams effectively.
