AI Tools: How Teens Are Using Technology for Flirting and Advice, According to NPR

A recent study by Common Sense Media reveals that nearly 75% of U.S. teenagers have interacted with AI tools for advice, entertainment, and social support. Conversational AI systems like CHAI and Replika offer teens a platform for role-playing and discussing mental health. The research shows that 52% of teens regularly engage with these AI companions, often finding them as or more satisfying than human interactions. However, concerns arise as one-third of teens report discussing serious issues with AI rather than peers, and 25% have shared personal information. With teens averaging 8 hours and 39 minutes of screen time daily, the influence of AI companions raises questions about emotional regulation and social skills. Importantly, 80% of teens still value human friendships over AI interactions. Common Sense Media advises against AI companion usage for those under 18 due to potential risks and lack of focus on youth well-being.
