AI Video App Banned Following Controversial Ad Promising Alterations to Women’s Bodies

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a controversial ad for the PixVideo – AI Video Maker app, seen on YouTube in January. The ad featured a woman’s midriff obscured by red scribbles in a “before” image, and bare skin in an “after” image, alongside the text “Erase anything” and a heart-eyes emoji. Eight complaints highlighted that the ad sexualized and objectified women, deeming it irresponsible and likely to cause serious offense. While PixVideo does not allow users to remove clothing, the ASA ruled the ad implied such functionality, which could condone the digital manipulation of women’s bodies without consent. This decision underscores the need for AI tool developers to adhere to strict advertising guidelines, as implications in their marketing can lead to significant regulatory scrutiny. The case emphasizes the responsibility of advertisers in framing their products, particularly concerning sensitive issues like body representation.
