Alibaba Group Holding has introduced Grape, the world’s first AI model designed to detect gastric cancer in its early stages by analyzing CT scans. This deep-learning framework, co-developed with Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, marks a significant advancement over traditional methods, which typically require invasive endoscopies that fewer than 30% of patients in China will undertake. Grape demonstrates impressive performance with 85.1% sensitivity and 96.8% specificity, surpassing radiologists without the model by 21.8% and 14%, respectively, particularly excelling in early-stage detection. This breakthrough could revolutionize gastric cancer screening, improving early detection rates significantly, especially since the disease often remains symptom-free until advanced stages. Cheng Xiangdong, a gastric surgeon at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, highlighted that the model may change how gastric cancer is screened both in China and globally, potentially enabling earlier diagnoses and better patient outcomes, as evidenced by a real-world case where a late-stage diagnosis could have been made six months sooner.
