IYO Inc. has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman, and designer Jony Ive, accusing them of willful trademark infringement. The complaint, lodged in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, claims that the launch of IO— a name similar to IYO—derailed IYO’s progress by copying its innovative wearable technology. IYO alleges that the defendants knowingly acted to undermine them, particularly following OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of IO Products Inc. shortly after IYO pitched similar ideas to Altman. Founded in 2021, IYO specializes in screenless AI-powered wearables, with its flagship product, the IYO ONE, aiming to redefine human-computer interaction. IYO believes IO’s mission and product resemble its own, asserting that their prototype announcement video closely reflects IYO’s vision. The lawsuit argues that IO’s branding and timing have created market confusion, jeopardizing IYO’s growth as it prepares to expand.
