Amazon AI Tool Unleashes Sales of Third-Party Products Without Consent

Amazon has come under scrutiny for adding AI-generated product listings from independent vendors to its platform without their consent, often resulting in inaccurate information. These listings emerged from Amazon’s Buy For Me program, creating duplicates that allow customers to purchase items directly on Amazon. California seller Angie Chua revealed that over 180 vendors have reported similar issues through a survey, with many unaware that their products were featured. Vendors like Sarah Burzio from Hitchcock Paper Co. faced challenges, as the inaccuracies in listings resulted in refund requests from customers. Amazon has historically encouraged independent vendors to sell on its platform, typically with prior notification and approval, making this situation unprecedented. Despite the backlash, Amazon stated that vendors could opt out of its services, yet did not provide clarity on the lack of prior consent for their listings. This situation underscores the complexities of Amazon’s seller practices and the implications of AI-driven content on e-commerce.
