Amazon Calls for Removal of AI Agent Comet from Marketplace

Amazon has officially demanded that Perplexity remove its AI agent, Comet, from its online store, citing violations of terms of service and lack of identification as a digital assistant. This request marks Amazon’s first legal action against an AI company. Perplexity argues that AI agents, when operating under human direction, should not be required to identify themselves as AI. Amazon states that all third-party assistants must comply with similar obligations to maintain customer service quality. The move is seen by Perplexity as a competitive tactic, especially since Amazon owns its shopping bot, Rufus. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the transparency and ethics of AI-operated purchasing systems, particularly regarding ads and product promotions. These developments highlight critical challenges within the evolving AI landscape. As the industry grows, establishing appropriate interaction protocols for AI assistants remains an important discussion. The future of AI agents hinges on balancing user rights and corporate interests.
