Amazon Partners with Water-AI Initiative to Reduce Data Center Water Consumption and Enhance AI Solutions for Water Management

Amazon is spearheading a transformative initiative to enhance water systems amid the AI boom through its AWS platform. Partnering with entities like the Water Environment Federation and the University of Pennsylvania, Amazon launched the Water-AI Nexus Center of Excellence. This initiative encompasses two key aspects: reducing water consumption linked to AI infrastructure (“Water for AI”) and utilizing AI to address water scarcity and improve utility operations (“AI for Water”). The Center acts as a collaborative knowledge hub for utilities, researchers, and tech firms, focusing on establishing standards, case studies, and cross-sector partnerships. A significant output is the guidance document titled “Principles for Sustainable Water Use by Data Centers,” which emphasizes strategic design, operational efficiency, sustainable water sourcing, and community replenishment. In line with its sustainability goals, Amazon aims to return more water to communities than it consumes in its data centers by 2030, promoting best practices industry-wide.
